Twitter is a micro-blogging Internet service best categorized under the term, social media. Twitter users (called Twitterers, Tweeple or even Tweeters) are able to connect with other Twitter users to share 140 character bits of texts and links called Tweets. Twitter was founded in 2006 as research project by Biz Stone, Noah Glass, Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams. The service exploded in popularity after winning the 2007 SXSW award in the Blog category.
There are numerous 3rd party applications that take advantage of Twitter's API to provide varying levels of functionality.
