Web Words Explained: Content Management System

The meaning is supposed to be simple. The omniscient information source known as Wikipedia currently defines a content management system, or CMS, as "a system providing a collection of procedures used to manage work flow in a collaborative environment"... Say what!?

Of course, this isn't the first time LevelTen has explained the meaning of a content management system and why you need one. The thing is, we can break this definition down a little further.

Web Words Explained: Open Source Software

I’ll let you in on a secret. Like many of you, I’m new to Drupal. Despite having a strong background in content management, Drupal is unexplored territory. I remember what it was like in the beginning as I learned to develop new sites. We all remember a point when we were baffled by basic applications like posting blogs, and terms like “CMS”, or “open source” seemed foreign.

Responsible Responsive Drupal Themes

After being introduced to the concept of responsive web theming, I took to it like a duck in water. I was pleased with the well documented contributed Drupal base theme, Omega based on the 960.gs grid. This amazing framework provides a plethora amount of configurable options, scalability and an overall sense of structure. I will not be covering any technical space-talk or how to configure Omega in this blog. If you would like to learn more about Omega, please visit the following site for more information: http://omega.developmentgeeks.com.

Comparing Popular CSS Grid Frameworks

There are essentially three approaches to your sites theme when using Drupal. One, you can use a pre built theme. There are several available that can be purchased or used without charge. Another method is you can build your theme from scratch. The third is to use a base theme that can be modified for your specific needs.

The Brick Wall of Learning Drupal

With just about anything new, there is a learning curve. Getting a new cellphone requires learning a new interface. Upgrading to a new operating system requires the same. Development tools also have learning curves, and Drupal is no exception. With Drupal though, it seems like people run smack into a learning wall instead of a learning curve. People new to Drupal tend to struggle for a long time to grasp the basics and many give up. Why is this?

You Never Forget Your First...Drupal Theme

I've created my first Drupal theme, Techy for D6, and at this point I'm going to call it early Beta. Still, I thought now would be as good of time as any to release it to the general public. I've submitted it to D.O (Drupal.org) and applied for a CVS account, so here's hoping to see it live in the next few weeks. I really struggled with trying to get it better and better and better, but remembered most of the themes on Drupal.org are horrible anyway. I decided getting feedback would probably be better than me continually trying to refine it.
