Britney wasn’t the only trainwreck of 2007…
If you were on the internet, or just were awake AT ALL during 2007, you got to see the trainwrecks that are celebrities unfold before your eyes. Well there was a whole slew of trainwrecks that didn’t get covered in gossip columns and news websites and Yahoo! Tech has exposed them to us all. They released their list of the “Top 10 Tech Train Wrecks of 2007″ and we get to breath a sigh of relief because “train wreck” and “Britney” were not in the same headline, and we also get some useful information.
Here is my stripped down version of their list:
Xbox 360: The 360 hardware was glitchy, prone to overheating, and susceptible to critical hardware failure.
BlackBerry: The service got so overloaded in April that it ground to a hault and caused users to be frantic and peeved at email delay.
Skype: The VoIP provider became an instant messenger as well and struck down the service in August for two days when they ran into a “software issue.”
AppleTV: Didn’t hear about it? No big surprise. It flopped and those who did use it complained of poor picture quality among a variety of other dislikes.
Sony Connect: Botched software releases, allegiance to the ATRAC file format, corporate in-fighting… Sony eventually put Connect out of misery.
Palm Foleo: Originally meant to be a smartphone “companion,” the Foleo was an underpowered, subnotebook that you would have to carry around with your notebook.
Vonage: After settling in court on infringement charges, the VoIP provider is now facing a mountain of debt while customers complain of poor service.
Amp’d Mobile: In June they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy - turns out in order to pay your bills, your subscribers have to pay theirs!
Apple iPhone: After they released the iPhone, they quickly dropped the price $200 to $399, this created a major backlash of the original buyers, to which Steve Jobs had to respond by givving the peeved patrons $100 in store credit. Later when they released an update, it ended up locking the iPhones which sparked another wave of outrage.
HD Format war: The battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD camps continues with no end in sight.
So that’s the tech trainwreck update of 2007. Hope not too many of you were affected by these, too bad we can’t say the same about the Britney situation…
