Artist or Designer...which is it?

I often contemplate: Is their a difference between an artist and a designer?

Typically a designer is given set limitations by a client. Designers combine a calculated, defined process with a client’s limitations to create fresh ideas. In other words, much planning and thought has been done to meet the requirements and expectations of a client while solving the actual design problem. Without any limitations the designer will solve the mental process using his/her own vision. When a client places limitations on a project it can be helpful for the designer to successfully create the client’s vision. Any designer needs to be able to explain the reasoning and thought process behind the design.

On the other hand, an artist does not have to adhere to any rules or requirements. Any good artist is able to convey an emotion, thought or feeling through his/her own rules. An artist is free to express themselves using their own vision. No artist will ever have to explain why they did something a certain way because they use their own passion and vision behind what they are trying to express.

Artist or designer …which is it? Can you be both? What are your thoughts?

artist and designer (Simplified)

The big difference between an artist and a designer is, the artist creates something then tries to find out how much he can get paid for it. The designer does it the other way around.
