I recently read a great article in the NY Times (recommended on Digg) that discusses the history of swearing in language, the benefits of swearing and the subconscious/conscious effects on oneself and others when swearing or hearing swear words.

The author, Natalie Angier, does a great job with the article, citing numerous studies, information from researchers of the evolution of language and examples of the use of “dirty words” for shock and impact in great literary works as far back as Shakespearean drama.
