Shortcuts are essential if you want to make the most when you’re working or browsing on the web. I have listed the basic, and a few advanced, shortcuts for Firefox users. Sure, you won’t use all of them, but at least try a few throughout the next couple of days and see if one, two, or maybe three work for you. You’ll start to see how productive being online can be without having to constantly reach for your mouse.

Control + A – Highlights all content on the current page

Control + C - Copy

Control + V - Paste

Control + P – Print

Control + S – Save

Control + T – Open a new tab in your current Firefox browser

Control + tab – Go back and forth between tabs

Control + N – Opens a new Firefox browser window

Chumby is here! Your morning is now personalized on your alarm clock.

Chumby Coffee

Chumby is the latest in alarm clock technology. It’s changing the way we wake up in the morning. The lovable bean bag filled alarm clock is the size of a coffee mug and feeds you up-to the minute headline news. Or rather you prefer checking the weather, traffic, Facebook updates, latest images from I CAN HAS CHEEZBURGER, or perhaps you need your Chuck Norris facts fix before you start your day. Whatever you need to get you up in the morning, chances are Chumby has the answer.

Chumby costs $180 and is available in black, latte and pearl. The device connects to your wireless home network, and has touch screen and motion sensor capabilities. The user is able to download widgets (over 700 available) & customize their Chumby directly from the website. Chumby is a Linux-based, open source platform. If you are a flash animator, feel free to show off your talents by building your own widget and submitting it on Chumby’s site for others to use. The site also has a Wiki, community forum, blog, and showcase page where you can submit and view pictures and videos of Chumby’s everywhere.

If you’re a visual person, watch this video. If you are short on time, fast forward to the 2:00 minute mark for the demonstration.

Chumby Industries, Inc. is a privately held company located in San Diego, CA.

SXSW

Two weeks from today, a group of LevelTen-ers will be headed down to the beautiful capital of Texas for the South by Southwest Interctive Festival. This yearly event is an opportunity to learn about the lattest trends in the online world as well as meet other interactive professionals from across the country. This year’s panels will focus on topics such as “Creating Findable Rich Media Content” to “The Top Ten Lessons Learned in E-Commerce” and “What Teens Want Online & On Their Phones.”

Since 1987, Austin has played host to the SXSW events which include festivals for music, film, and of course interactive. What started out as a major event for the music industry, has now grown into a two week event for all three. The interactive and film industries were added in 1994 to “mirror the ever increasing convergence of entertainment/media outlets.”

The highlight of this festival for me will be Sunday’s Keynote speaker, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and Founder of Facebook.com. Not only have I been obsessed with Facebook since before it came to my university and I was able to become a member, but I am also fascinated by social networks and the way people flock to them. The fact that Zuckerberg, who is younger than me, has taken what started as a college networking platform to one of the most visited sites on the internet is so captivating and I cannot wait to hear what he says about the future of social networks.

While we are in Austin, I hope to recap all of the events and share all of our newfound knowledge through the LevelTen Blog. So stay tunned, only 14 more days to go.

When I think of Valentines’s Day, chocolates, flowers, and those little chalk-tasting hearts with the messages come to mind. But Dr. Pepper is taking a gamble that people who associate Valentine’s Day with Vegas marriages will also associate its new Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper drink with the holiday. That’s the idea behind a new microsite from Cadbury Schweppes in partnership with Yahoo and Vegas Tourism.

Dr Pepper Vegas

On February 14th, visitors can watch live web-stremed weddings from the three chapels at the Hard Rock Hotel, propose to someone, book their Vegas wedding with e-card invitations or crash another person’s wedding. But the fun doesn’t end after the big day, Cadbury Schweppes has bought Yahoo’s front page for February 15, according to Enid Burns at ClickZ. The article also states that a large budget has been allocated to search and display ads to promote the site and create buzz.

The site sounds catchy at first; it’s like reality wedding television on your web browser, but if you are like me you were probably left wondering, what is going to make the average person stay on this site for more than 30 seconds or for that matter, visit the site again the following day? And why would this make me want to buy and/or drink more Dr. Pepper?

My guess is having Pauly Shore as the host.

It is a well publicized fact that with our American freedom to vote comes a very important clause- an American right to privacy for our vote. Not so well-known is the fact that every political financial contribution that you make is available for public viewing. This, of course, begs the question: Who makes financial contributions toward a political candidate whom they do not intend to vote for? Although I am aware that all financial contributions must be documented, I suppose I always assumed- incorrectly it seems- that there was at least some level of anonymity in supporting a candidate. Contrary to this assumption, political contributions can be searched by name, address, or even occupation. Once I got past my initial shock and slight disappointment, curiosity got the best of me. I mean, let’s face it, if you could find out who your boss was voting for, wouldn’t you be tempted to do so? Public accessible contribution documentation offers the next best thing. Is my artist friend a closet conservative? Where does everyone on Dancing with the Stars stand on political issues? Do I live in a neighborhood of Republicans? So, go check it out. Disapprove for a moment if you must, but then give in to your urge to snoop on your fellow citizen’s financial and political decisions. It’s the American way.

Myvirtualzone.com has recently introduced a new product to its line, designed to help eliminate stress in the office or home. The Zen Dolphin is a battery-operated, light-up gadget intended to simulate the swimming path of a dolphin through ocean waves. It is suitable for ages 10 and up, although I am still uncertain as to what sort of stress 10-year-olds are encountering. The illuminated base features a suspended dolphin that lights up and flexes its fins, appearing to gracefully swim atop your desk. It is complete with dolphin and ocean sounds, and the “soothing effect” may be adjusted with volume, light, and timer controls. Though I am certain that the dolphin is meant to alleviate stress through the suggestion of the peaceful swimming, my comfort is found in a bit more deviant manner. By staring at the mounted dolphin attempting to swim on my desk, it actually feels as if I am making progress during my day; at least I manage to move in circles. Whatever your reasoning, the Zen Dolphin is a fun novelty to add to your work day.

Recently, I wondered to myself, “What will happen on the road today? If only there was some way for me to know about the journey ahead.” Now, I’m not talking about the road of life here. I don’t get caught up in those sorts of clichés. No, I’m actually referring to my car ride home. Or to work or to that new Mexican restaurant I’ve been meaning to try. Anywhere, really. I want to know if my car is ready to sustain the onslaught of vehicle damages ready to attack from every angle. I’m no mechanic, however, and quite honestly, spending three hours daily at the Jiffy Lube to foster my peace of mind simply is not practical. So, where’s a girl to turn?

Carseller’s Auto-Horoscope, of course.

Auto Logo

Just like typical astrology pages, the reader simply locates their sign and reads that day’s interpretation of the stars. Or if you’re like me, you also read every other sign’s information, cursing the date of your birth when it sounds like you would have been better off as a Leo. Unlike mystical, ungrounded astrological readings, though, which often leave me wondering what the reading is referencing, auto-horoscopes can be directly applied to your ride ahead.

Here is an example of my recent auto-horoscope:

Gemini

“Do not be frightened, if today for you it is necessary to leave on the automobile into the twilights, the dense fog, the strong shower and with other circumstances, which limit visibility. Under similar conditions you will feel yourselves sufficient- after all good - possibly, even only it is better than with the clear weather in the middle of day.”

I felt much better afterward; life can be so scary when you haven’t a clue where your fog lights might be leading you.

So, here’s the key- go see what’s on the road ahead. http://carseller.theautoreviews.com/horoscope/

Without doubt, this has to be the coolest new Google Gadget. I love the idea of having a pet at the office, but putting a live goldfish in a tiny bowl just seems cruel. These little guys are just as fun as the real thing but without the guilt. Once you add them to your site you can get new fish, change their color, and even feed them by clicking your mouse! They don’t die either, which is a real bonus for those of us who are still recovering from childhood goldfish and sea-monkey burials. Go get some fish!
